Traditional Irish cuisine in Belfast

"The Morning Star Bar & Restaurant" in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a historic establishment that has been in operation since 1810 and has made a name for itself as one of the oldest and most traditional pubs in the city. Originally founded as a rest stop for stagecoach drivers on the route between Belfast and Dublin, it has developed over the centuries into a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Today, it is run by the McAlister family, who have taken over management since 1988 and preserve the heritage with great dedication. The restaurant skillfully combines the atmosphere of a traditional Irish pub with a modern culinary offering that focuses on local and sustainable ingredients.

Best pubs in Northern Ireland

The ambiance at "The Morning Star" is unique and steeped in history. The building, located in a narrow, cobbled alley, has been carefully restored to maintain its Victorian charm—such as the distinctive, intricately designed iron sign hanging above the entrance. Inside, one encounters a warm, inviting atmosphere with wooden accents and a touch of nostalgia that recalls the times when the establishment was illuminated by gas lamps. It is a place that radiates both coziness and liveliness, especially on days when the house is full and guests enjoy the famous hospitality of the McAlisters.

Historic restaurant in Belfast

Culinarily, "The Morning Star" embodies a "farm-to-fork" philosophy, with a focus on the connection to Northern Ireland's agriculture. The family, engaged in farming for generations, sources many ingredients directly from their own farm or from local producers. They take particular pride in their steaks, considered the best in Belfast—such as the juicy ribeye or the impressive tomahawk steak, prepared by an in-house master butcher. The kitchen also offers other delights: the "Lamb Stew" is a hearty dish that impresses with deep flavors and tender meat, while the "Tempura Courgette Frites" add a modern touch with their light crispiness. Even the sides, like the homemade "Sweet Potato Fries" or the fresh bread from the "Morning Star Kitchen Garden," reflect the care that goes into every detail.

Local ingredients in restaurant

In addition to the food, "The Morning Star" is also known for its selection of drinks. The bar offers an impressive range of Irish whiskeys that pair perfectly with the hearty dishes, as well as local craft beers and classic cocktails. The Sunday roast, in particular, has a legendary reputation and has even been named among the best in the United Kingdom—a lavish meal served with perfectly cooked meat, plenty of vegetables, and a rich gravy.

Authentic hospitality in Belfast

The service is often described as warm and genuine, underscoring the family character of the establishment. The staff, who share the McAlisters' passion, ensure that guests feel like part of a large community. The restaurant has received numerous awards, including several titles as the best gastro pub in the region, solidifying its position as a culinary highlight in Belfast.

Carvery is cheap but really not eatable and very minimal choice. Staff on the buffet didn't look like he wanted to be there and had zero customer service skills

We stumbled upon The Morning Star after two other pubs were too busy to take us, and we are glad we did. The atmosphere and service were immediately impressive. The food, which came quickly, was delicious and far beyond our expectations for pub food. Tasty options for both meat eater and vegetarian. We would highly, highly recommend this pub.

Lovely pub in Belfast, excellent service throughout with phenomenal food. Prices slightly higher than other places nearby but 100% worth the difference, would happily pay more for the quality of food.

If you like being ignored three times, then yes. If you are a person who likes to go to the bar and ask for everything because the waitress ignores you and you asked for a menu and still get ignored, then this is your bar! The food was buffet so ok. You get what you stand for. The ambience is really nice but the tables are a bit sticky. Toilets ok

The worst fish and chips I've had the displeasure of eating. It was clearly overcooked and tasted disgusting. It looked like a burnt croissant that had been plopped on top of the last few chips that had been scraped out of the engine oil they cooked it in. It was difficult to eat the "fish" when it's balanced on top of the chips while half the plate is covered with a streak of tartar sauce. I can't believe they had the gall to serve this. Maybe skip this if you eat here.

First time in the Morning Star which was recommended to us, first impressions were the staff who were very attentive and let us choose a table of our choice which we thought was nice, then the food it was absolutely beautiful we had a sharing platter to start and then 2 steaks which were cooked to perfection I can only recommend that you go and try this restaurant/bar out as I will be recommending it to to my friends and colleagues. The staff were brilliant all night and there was no rush and a nice quiet atmosphere, we will be back for a steak soon!!!!

Always knew of the Morning start and always thought of it as a wee pub down joys entry!! Hubby decided to eat here for my birthday and honestly it is a hidden gem!! The food was absolutely outstanding, the shared starter was amazing it was a meal in itself, the flavours, the staff, the atmosphere was just perfect and very welcoming. The bar man even brought 2 different bottles of wine over for us to try before we decided. Nothing was too much bother. Will definitely be back.

We both had the roast beef. Food was delicious but portion size was very small for the price paid. £17 for the roast beef was very steep for the size of portion we got. Only half a carrot and no other vegetables! Food was also quite cold which was disappointing. They also charge £1.50 for dilute which I just can’t digest! Don’t think I would recommend, there is better value elsewhere around the city.

We visited this place twice for food during our stay. Nice bar with a good atmosphere. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. The waiter on our first visit was very attentive and provided great service however the second visit the waitress was not so attentive. We had to ask to order food after waiting a while. she also forgot the drinks order and had to be reminded which was a bit disappointing after having such a great experience first time around.

Came across this place in a myriad of options locally. What a find ! Initially only for a drunk but then decided to eat..was looking at menu which looked reasonable. We also noted the hit food counter and my wife asked more. Basically a great option of multiple foods at a great price of £8. Only xatch was this food ended at 17.00 but we snuck in! Amazing value and honest food. Staff were all freindly and accommodating. We arrived as strangers but left feeling like freinds. Having since seen other reviews I would honestly say this is definitely worth a visit..

Busy old style bar and eatery. A bit of a gem retaining style of yesteryear. Didn't eat but the food looked excellent.
